Magazine Front Cover Analysis
Research for style magazines:
This magazine conforms into the codes and conventions of a fashion/style magazine. This cover features a female modern who is central of the page, she is in a flamboyant outfit but due to the picture being in black and white we cant tell the colours involved. The only colours we can really see is through the coverlines and the masthead which adds some bright tones to the cover. Additionally, speckles of glitter are highlighted on the cover around the feather piece which adds a carnival feel. By having hints of colour within the cover lines it engages the audience which makes the audience actually read the coverlines, for example by the 10 being in colour makes the audience wonder what it is about therefore capturing their attention. Another code and convention is the masthead it is in a large font to make it stand out so it is bold and eye-catching whilst also being recognisable that is why it is also placed central and at the top so it’ is the first thing you see. The target audience for this cover would be teenagers or young adults who have an interest in fashion they potentially might be of a Polish ethnicity because the model Kasia Struss is Polish so it brings in that Polish audience as it is offering a diverse representation.
This magazine cover featuring Rhianna follows the codes and conventions of a magazine cover. The masthead uses the stereotypical Vogue font making it recognisable to fans of the brand especially because it is in a bold yellow font which makes it eye catching for audiences. This would target a primary target audience of those interested in fashion due to this cover being a statement with the bright colours but also her makeup because it isn't the makeup Rhianna usually does which would interest fashion fans. The fact the cover is Rhianna targets her fans especially her ’super fans’ because they might think this magazine could be an announcement or they might even just like collecting her cd’s and magazines she has featured on. The colour scheme is very bright a summary with the gloves, flowers and the scarf which contradicts her dark makeup which makes the magazine stick out more as it isn't stereotypical. Unlike other covers this one isn't covered in cover lines instead it just has one main one being ’The Big Fashion Issue’ which is in a large font at the bottom of the page making it prominent instead of loads of little cover lines scattered around.
This cover of British Vogue is quite simplistic because the cover isn't overcrowded by coverlines instead the main focus of this cover is the image. Unlike a lot of magazines, the main image isn't central instead the model is to the right and the glove takes up majority of the page which makes an audience focus on the glove instead of the model. This cover also opposes stereotypes because the model isn't wearing a flashy outfit instead she is just in a simple black outfit to really make the audience focus on the glove which is the eye catcher. The colour of the masthead doesn’t match the main part of the outfit which Vogue likes to do instead it matches the feel of the cover so it is sophisticated and clean. The target audience would be those fashion fans because this is such a simplistic cover they will enjoy the focus that is actually is going to be on the glove and the fashion instead of just how beautiful the model is. I also think gay men would enjoy this cover and be engaged by it because it is elegant with pops of fun included within the cover which captures the audiences attention.
